🕊️Your Faith Isn’t a Houseplant (Stop Watering It Once a Month)

Let’s just address the elephant in the room.
Some of us treat our faith like that poor houseplant sitting in the corner.
You know the one.
It gets ignored for three weeks, receives one dramatic splash of water after you remember it exists, and somehow you’re shocked when it’s hanging on by a single sad little leaf.
Friend… sometimes our walk with God looks suspiciously similar.
We skip time in His Word because life gets busy. Prayer gets replaced with “I’ll talk to You later, Lord.” Church becomes optional. We convince ourselves that one inspirational quote on social media counts as spiritual nourishment.
Then we wonder why we feel spiritually dry.
Spoiler alert: faith wasn’t designed to survive on leftovers.
Gardens Don’t Grow by Accident
Jesus used gardening illustrations all the time because everyone understood one simple truth:
Healthy things require attention.
A thriving garden doesn’t magically appear because someone bought seeds.
The soil has to be prepared.
The weeds have to be removed.
The plants have to be watered.
The sunlight has to reach them.
Day after day.
Week after week.
Season after season.
Our hearts aren’t any different.
In Luke 8, Jesus describes people whose hearts become like good soil—people who hear God’s Word, hold tightly to it, and patiently produce fruit. It isn’t instant. It isn’t flashy. It’s cultivated over time.
Weeds Don’t Ask Permission
Here’s the frustrating part.
Nobody plants weeds.
They just… show up.
Fear.
Distraction.
Comparison.
Bitterness.
Busyness.
Endless scrolling because apparently we needed to know what Karen from high school had for lunch.
Left unattended, those things quietly choke out what God is trying to grow.
That’s why Scripture repeatedly calls us to examine our hearts. To pull up what doesn’t belong before it steals nutrients from what does.
It’s much easier to pull a tiny weed than a fully grown root system.
Just saying.
Stop Looking for Overnight Fruit
Can we talk about our Amazon Prime expectations for a minute?
We want spiritual maturity in two business days.
We pray once.
Read one chapter.
Listen to half a sermon.
Then think,
“Lord… I still struggle with anxiety. What’s taking so long?”
Meanwhile, God is over here growing oak trees while we’re asking for microwave popcorn.
Growth has always been slow.
Consistent.
Intentional.
Beautiful.
The fruit of the Spirit doesn’t appear overnight because fruit takes time.
And honestly?
That’s a good thing.
Because while we’re waiting for visible fruit, God is busy strengthening the roots.
The Quiet Work Nobody Sees
One of my favorite things about gardens is that the most important work happens underground.
Before anyone sees flowers…
Roots are growing.
Before anyone enjoys fruit…
The tree is strengthening.
Before anyone notices change…
Life is happening beneath the surface.
Your quiet time may not feel exciting every morning.
Your prayers may sometimes feel repetitive.
Your journal entries might seem ordinary.
But every single moment you spend with God is another root reaching deeper into His truth.
Don’t underestimate hidden growth.
God certainly doesn’t.
Tend the Garden God Gave You
Maybe today your garden feels overgrown.
Maybe you’ve neglected it.
Maybe weeds have gotten comfortable.
Maybe you’re exhausted.
Guess what?
Gardeners don’t throw away the whole garden because weeds appeared.
They get to work.
One weed.
One seed.
One watering.
One day at a time.
And here’s the beautiful part…
God is the Master Gardener.
He isn’t standing over you with crossed arms waiting for perfection.
He’s kneeling beside you, helping you cultivate something beautiful.
Because this has never been about checking off another quiet time.
It’s about becoming more like Christ.
One surrendered heart at a time.
